The lotus is one of the most beautiful and enduring spiritual symbols in the Yoga tradition.
In Sanskrit, there are many words for lotus. One of its most well-known names is Padma.
Padma signifies more than a beautiful flower. It represents the movement of our lives from embodiment to full awakening. It takes us from our deepest longings to their highest fruition.
The Lotus Grows from the Mud
The lotus begins its life rooted in the mud beneath the water. The mud represents the body and the material conditions that we grow through.
And just as the lotus grows from the mud, we grow through our embodied experience.
The challenges (the mud) we face become the ground from which our highest realization will emerge.
In the same way, the difficult or imperfect parts of our lives don’t disqualify us from becoming who we're meant to be. They can become the very ground of our transformation.
The Lotus Rises Above the Mind
The lotus grows upward from the mud until it rests upon the surface of the lake.
The lake symbolizes the mind.
The thinking mind is always moving with thoughts, memories, emotions, fears, hopes, and desires. The lotus rests on the surface of the water.
This is means that while we have a mind, we are not directed or limited by the mind.
Through yogic practice, we can learn to witness our thoughts without being governed by them. We learn to remain connected to what is deeper, steadier, to what is luminous within ourselves.
The Lotus Opens to the Sunlight
As the lotus sits on the surface of the lake, it waits for the light of the sun to fall on it. As much as the light reaches the lotus, so much its petals open to the sun.
The sun symbolizes the light of the Self, awareness, that’s always present.
In the same way that the lotus opens toward the sun, we also open and become fully blossomed the more we turn towards that inner light.
When we realize the highest Self, we live like the jivanmukta, awake while alive.
We live with greater clarity and connection to our divinity.
Padma and the Fruition of Our Deepest Desires
The lotus symbolizes fruition and the realization of our deepest desires.
This is not just the fulfillment of any passing wish. It’s the realization of our highest intentions which are aligned with who we are and what we are here for.
A lotus doesn’t blossom all at once. It flowers as the result of a process : It's rooted in the earth, then it grows through the water, and sits on the surface or the water, rising above the mind. The lotus then opens towards the light of the sun.
The lotus metaphor says:
May your deepest desires and their realization unfold for you.
Wear the Symbol of Your Becoming
The lotus is an emblem of the realization of our highest aims.
It reminds us that we can grow from the circumstances of our life without being defined by them. We can rise above the confusion of the mind. We can stand in the light, and manifest our deepest intentions.
